Studio de Artes Espaço Aberto

Dancing School in Rio de Janeiro

The Studio de Artes Espaço Aberto, located in Rocinha, the largest favela in Brazil in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, celebrated 25 years of transformation through dance under the passionate leadership of Yolanda Demétrio. Since 1998, it has offered free courses in ballet, Afro-Brazilian dance, jazz, and more, ensuring access for all. Despite challenges such as holding classes on the beach due to space constraints, Espaço Aberto provides a safe haven for young people to develop skills, boost their self-esteem, and envision a better future.

Despite the challenges, Yolanda welcomes approximately 150 students each year. Tragically, the project’s home was destroyed in a conflict against drug trafficking in the region. However, this setback only strengthens Yolanda’s determination to rebuild the studio and provide even better opportunities for her students.

Our goal is to rebuild the Espaço Aberto building to create more space for classes and events, providing students with the opportunity to showcase their talent and the transformative power of dance. This ensures that children have a safe space to express themselves, find joy, and pursue their dreams, positively impacting the youth and community of Rocinha.
